Swimming lessons - June 2012

A couple weeks ago I was wasting some time on pinterest. I came across someones pin, it was a stack of Blurb Books they had created - 5 years of blog entries.  My heart sank a little.  That was alway my goal when I started this blog.  I wanted to keep my family who lives out of state up to date on our daily activities and wanted to eventually turn this blog into family history books.  I was doing so well for quite a while.  I was taking pictures of my kids and posting them.

Then I started my little photography business and the posts became further and further apart.  Then stopped.  I've still been photographing my kids, but each image is just sitting in Lightroom waiting to be  processed.  After seeing that stack of books I decided I really need to do better.  I went back and read my old blog entries.  I had completely forgotten about some of the conversations the kids and I had.  I was so grateful I had recorded them.  I need to do it again.  It may not be in chronological order, it may be just pictures or it may be a quick quote from one of the kids.  Comments are fun and I love getting them, but they are not the reason why I blog.

Today is a perfect day to jump back in.

I took the kids to the YMCA today.  I have been putting it off for the past few weeks.  We had 2 weeks of swimming lessons and then I thought maybe we could do without going this summer.  WRONG.  The past 2 weeks we have been trudging thru summer.  It hasn't been fun.  We've been stuck inside avoiding the heat.  The kids have been either watching TV or playing on the ipad.  I've been sitting on the couch eating bon-bons.  I had enough.  I dragged them to the pool.

When we were driving, I asked Thomas if he was going to attempt the swim test.  If kids want to ride the water slides or jump off the diving board they have to swim across the pool unassisted.  Thomas decided he was going to try.  He was so nervous and pacing back and forth before the testing time.  I could feel his nerves.  He wanted to pass so badly, but had never swam that far without having a foot touch the bottom.

I originally told him I would take the test too and swim right along side of him.  When he lined up for the test the only way I was going to be able to swim with him would be if I cut in line.  I didn't want to do that so I told him I would walk along the side while he swam.  I bent down to talk to him and told him that it didn't matter if he went fast, all he had to do was finish.  I wished him luck and he jumped in.   And swam the entire length without touching the bottom!  He pulled himself out of the pool with the biggest grin I have ever seen.  He was so proud of himself, he was even trembling a little.  I was so proud of him!  It's a good thing I was wearing sunglasses because I may or may not have started to tear up and do a mommy cry.
